I Didn’t See You There

(Reid Davenport, 2022)

ReelAbilities Film Festival Columbus

Q&A with Reid Davenport at 2:30 PM

Ohio Premiere

In a reflection of an unmarked storefront is a grayish silhouette of a man using an electric wheelchair. Behind the man is a spectacular red-and-yellow circus tent.

Thanks to our partnership with Art Possible Ohio, we’re presenting screenings for ReelAbilities Film Festival Columbus—launching with disabled filmmaker Reid Davenport’s new, first feature-length documentary.

One of the highlights of this year’s Sundance Film Festival documentary competition—and winner of the directing award in that category—I Didn’t See You There provides a vitally needed perspective rarely seen in documentary filmmaking. Davenport is a visibly disabled person whose film chronicles how he sees the world from his wheelchair. He creates memorable images—informed from his position in space—that are often abstracted in beautiful ways. But the views outside his Oakland apartment are frequently obstructed by a large, temporary circus tent—the main inspiration for the film due to its association with “freak shows.” The powerfully personal film sees Davenport showing vivid experiences and insights on spectacle and (in)visibility. (76 mins., DCP)

We’re lucky to have Davenport participating in a Q&A with the audience via Zoom. Join us in the Film/Video Theater at 2:30 PM in between the two screenings.

Happening as a complementary program of the ReelAbilities launch is Audio Café—an accessible, cross-disability community making event developed in partnership with Art Possible Ohio. Learn more about Audio Café here.
