H. G. Wells? Edgar Allan Poe? Bela Lugosi? These legends come together for a night of surgical—and controversial—horror.
Based on H. G. Wells’s classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, Island of Lost Souls stars Charles Laughton as the fiendish mad scientist conducting disturbing experiments on local animals to create a race of hybrid human beings. When a sailor (Richard Arlen) is stranded on the island, Dr. Moreau has the perfect specimen to test the limits of his theories. Also starring Bela Lugosi. (70 mins., 35mm)
Based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, Murders in the Rue Morgue was widely censored across the country on its release. Bela Lugosi stars as Dr. Mirakle, a mad doctor who kidnaps and experiments on Parisian women, injecting them with gorilla blood in hopes of creating a mate for Erik, his sideshow gorilla. Pursued by a tenacious detective, the doctor must resort to violent means to cover his tracks. (61 mins., 35mm)
