It's Always Fair Weather

(Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, 1955)

A couple sits in the backseat of a car. A woman with black hair pulled back in a gray jacket and red shirt has her arm around the shoulder of a man in a gray suit who looks longingly at her.

“An excellent showcase for dancing, marked by innovative, impressionistic routines... Throughout, the movie maintains a mood of sorrowful post-war disappointment.”—AV Club

From the same writing and directing teams who created On the Town (1949) and Singin’ in the Rain (1952), It’s Always Fair Weather features exuberant musical scenes that find Gene Kelly dancing in roller skates, Cyd Charisse sparring in a boxing gym, and the three male leads (Kelly, Dan Dailey, and the legendary choreographer Michael Kidd) performing a jaw-dropping tap routine with trash can lids for shoes.

The story involves three WWII buddies who meet up for a 10-year reunion only to discover how much they’ve drifted apart. Its cynical, melancholy take on Madison Avenue, television, and 1950s American values contrasts with joyous dance sequences, making this one of the most tonally complex (and one of last) Golden Age MGM musicals. The movie’s exquisite use of CinemaScope and lush sense of color made it an essential big-screen experience. Written by the landmark team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green. (102 mins., 35mm)
