Japan's Longest Day

(Nihon no ichiban nagai hi, Kihachi Okamoto, 1967)

35MM Print

Black-and-white still of a person in a patterned kimono who is trying to flee from four soldiers with weapons.

Toshirō Mifune plays Minister of War Korechika Anami in this gripping, documentary-like portrayal of the hours leading up to Japan’s surrender to the Allies on August 15, 1945.

As Emperor Hirohito prepares to record a message of defeat to be broadcast to the Japanese people, military and government officials opposed to the surrender are determined to stop the announcement at any cost. True to the day’s events, the nonstop action culminates in a memorable—and graphic—group seppuku, or ritual suicide. The film was produced to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Toho studio. (157 mins., 35mm)
