The transformative documentary Journeys Beyond the Cosmodrome follows nine 16-year-olds from Kazakhstan’s Akkol orphanage as they imagine, write about, and perform their future selves. The orphanage sits on the vast Kazakh Steppe near the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the world’s first and largest spaceport. Working in collaboration with experimental filmmaker Jeanne Finley and writer Lyazzat Khanim, the orphans draw from the rich landscape, iconography, and nomadic Kazakh culture surrounding them as they explore the challenging reality of their lives. (53:30 mins., video) Columbus Threshold Choir performs songs from the film after the screening.
