La strada

(The road, Federico Fellini, 1954)

Black-and-white still of Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina) and Zampanò (Anthony Quinn) in a field. Zampanò is lying on the ground, and Gelsomina is crouched behind him, pulling his left eye open with her forefinger with a worried look on her face.

In this film that made Fellini and wife Giulietta Masina international stars, Anthony Quinn plays a brutish strongman who crushes the spirit of his devoted assistant (Masina).

Zampanò (Quinn) travels from village to village performing feats of strength for spare change accompanied by the innocent Gelsomina (Masina), who is increasingly worn down by his emotional and physical abuse. A timeless classic, La strada won more than 50 international awards, including the first Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. (108 mins., 4K DCP)
