The first animated feature to be made using CinemaScope, this classic Disney film is filled with lush, panoramic settings and richly detailed backgrounds that look gorgeous on a big screen.
In this charming Disney canine romance, the refined cocker spaniel Lady (voiced by Barbara Luddy) finds herself on the streets after her pampered life with her human family is disrupted. She meets a roguish stray named Tramp (voiced by Larry Roberts) who shows her the ropes—how to avoid the dogcatcher, how to score a free spaghetti dinner—as the two pooches from opposite sides of the tracks fall in love.
Produced during Hollywood’s move to more widescreen production in the early 1950s, Lady and the Tramp was the first animated feature to be made using CinemaScope. Animators needed to adjust to this new format—employing fewer close-ups, for example—but the result is an all-time animated great. Bonus: Lady and the Tramp includes several songs by the iconic Peggy Lee, including the showstopper “He’s a Tramp.” This film’s considered a classic for a reason! (76 mins., 4K DCP)
