Retrospective: Michael Schultz kicks off with The Last Dragon, the director’s delirious homage to 1970s kung fu and Blaxploitation movies.

Set in New York City, The Last Dragon follows a young martial arts expert nicknamed “Bruce” Leroy Green (Taimak) who seeks a master that can help him attain “The Glow,” the final stage in his training. Meanwhile Leroy must fend off challenges from his rival, “The Shogun of Harlem,” and rescue a beautiful singer (Vanity) from an evil video game producer.

Met with sour reviews but a solid box office return on its release, the film has become a much beloved cult classic. Executive producer and Motown founder Berry Gordy supervised the soundtrack which includes DeBarge’s hit “Rhythm of the Night” and Vanity's “7th Heaven.” With Julius Carry and Christopher Murney.
