Examine the effects of government-sanctioned violence and corruption in this double feature of documentaries by New Day Films cofounder and Ohio-based filmmaker Jim Klein.
Klein has been a pivotal figure in independent documentary production since the early 1970s. A student in the 1960s, he returns to a college setting in Letter to the Next Generation, visiting Kent State University 20 years after four students were shot and killed by Ohio National Guardsmen during an antiwar demonstration. A valuable time capsule, the film compares students’ values and feelings about activism in the 1990s with those of Klein’s generation. (68 mins., digital video)
In Taken for a Ride, Klein investigates the campaign led by the oil and automobile industries to dismantle streetcar lines—once an important form of public transportation in cities across the country—and chronicles the citizens who protested against the scheme to increase dependence on cars and highways. (52 mins., digital video)
