Filmmaker Rithy Panh revisits his memories of the years when millions of Cambodians lost their lives under the Khmer Rouge regime in this unforgettable documentary.
In The Missing Picture, which was nominated for the 2013 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Panh reconstructs scenes of daily life during that traumatic era. Since so many personal belongings were destroyed by the regime led by Pol Pot, there is little remaining visual record of life during this time. The director fills in the missing pieces with clay animation in reenactments that sharply contrast with the chilling “official” Khmer footage woven throughout the film. The result is a powerful testament to human resilience and the restorative power of art. In French and English with English subtitles. (92 mins., DCP)
