A growing force in nonfiction filmmaking, 2017–18 Wexner Center Artist Residency Award recipient Penny Lane returns to present two of her recent projects on the occasion of The Flyover Fest.
An intimate and unflinching act of radical empathy, The Pain of Others is made entirely from YouTube videos by sufferers of Morgellons. Those afflicted with the mysterious illness say that they have parasites under their skin, colored fibers emerging from lesions on their bodies, and a host of other horrific-sounding symptoms. The film carefully sets up an unsettling encounter with a group of “Morgies” who have turned to YouTube for help and to prove they’re not crazy. (71 mins., DCP)
Lane previously visited in 2013 to screen her award-winning documentary NUTS!. Don’t miss her films Hail Satan? (May 10–11) and Normal Appearances (on view all May in The Box).
This screening is presented in conjunction with The Flyover Fest, a fresh and inclusive arts festival featuring literature, film, music, panel discussions, and more in Columbus May 8–11. Visit theflyoverfest.com for a complete schedule.
