Normal Appearances (2018)

Normal Appearances

A study of female heterosexual self-consciousness as seen through the lens of #BachelorNation, Normal Appearances is what filmmaker Penny Lane has called an “ambivalent fan video.”

By focusing on the adjustments that contestants on The Bachelor are constantly making to their clothes—a tug on a miniskirt here, futzing with a shoulder strap there—the discomfort inherent in the show’s scenario (and that its producers labor to smooth over) is put on full display. (5 mins., video)

A Wexner Center Residency Award recipient, Penny Lane worked on the short with the support of the center’s Film/Video Studio Program. She’ll be visiting the center on May 10–11 in conjunction with The Flyover Fest to introduce and discuss her two latest feature films, Hail Satan? and The Pain of Others.
