(Festival panafrican d’Alger, William Klein, 1969)

Presented in collaboration with Cinéseries
Discussion follows

Still from The Pan-African Festival of Algiers that depicts a group of Black people in different colored outfits with their fists raised.

Iconic artist and filmmaker William Klein vibrantly documents a landmark celebration of African identity and culture in the wake of Algerian independence.

Cinéseries presents William Klein’s landmark film of the first Pan-African Cultural Festival in 1969. Algeria gained independence from France in 1962 and soon emerged as a space for postcolonial movements. Commissioned by the Algerian government, Klein’s documentary is a celebration of African identity and culture that can be seen in the festival’s performances, art, marches, and rehearsals. Interviews with writers and advocates of the freedom movements explore colonialism, neocolonialism, colonial exploitation, revolutionary movements for independence, and African culture. The film presents a moment of hope for communities breaking away from colonial rule and features artists, activists, and political figures, as well as performances from celebrated singers Miriam Makeba and Nina Simone and saxophonist Archie Shepp. In French with English subtitles. (120 mins., DCP).

This screening was curated by Cinéseries member and Wexner Center Graduate Curatorial Intern Dareen Hussein and cocurated by Cinéseries member Marcus Morris in conjunction with Sarah Maldoror: Tricontinental Cinema. Stay after the screening for an informal discussion in the café.
