Quartiers Lointains: Metamorphosis

(Various, 2018–22)

An older Black man sits in a living room chair. A younger Black man holding a duffel bag stands behind him, looking down at him.

Discover new voices in Pan-African and French cinema with the 10th anniversary edition of the Quartier Lointains program.

This year’s program focuses on the theme of metamorphosis and includes four films by French African filmmakers. Together, they examine questions about adapting to new cultures, navigating institutions that might not be equipped to deal with culturally specific concerns, lack of representation on screen, and other questions unique to the African diaspora.

Quartiers Lointains is a touring program of short, French-language films that began in 2013 and is dedicated to seeking out and spotlighting emerging cinematic voices. It was founded by French-Burkinabè film critic and distributor Claire Diao; this year’s program is guest curated by Aude N’Guessan and sponsored by filmmaker Alice Diop. In French with English subtitles. (93 mins., DCP)
