Me and My Gal (Raoul Walsh, 1932)

The Warrior’s Husband (Walter Lang, 1933)

Double Feature

On the left is a black-and-white still from Me and My Gal featuring a man with curly, darker hair who is wearing a button-down shirt and tie. To the right is a woman with curly blonde hair; she has her hand on the man’s chest, and she’s wearing a black shirt with a white collar and bowtie. On the right is a black-and-white still from The Warrior’s Husband featuring a woman in warrior garb laying down while a man (on her right) with curly hair and a long beard looks over her.

Kick off The Columbus Moving Picture Show with this Pre-Code–era double feature at the Wex.

The period between the widespread use of sound in 1929 and the enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code in 1934, Hollywood’s Pre-Code era remains popular for its films’ suggestive dialogue, risqué situations, and frank depictions of social issues. Take in two gems from this era at this screening presented in conjunction with The Columbus Moving Picture Show, Columbus’s annual gathering of classic movie lovers, which takes place this year May 26–29 at the Renaissance Hotel.

Raoul Walsh’s Me and My Gal features Spencer Tracy as New York cop Danny and Joan Bennett as his crush, the witty waitress Helen, who join forces to keep Helen’s sister from her gangster ex-boyfriend. (79 mins., 4K DCP)

Walter Lang’s gender-reversing farce The Warrior’s Husband is set in the ancient land of the female Amazon army and their stay-at-home men. Played by Katharine Hepburn in the 1932 Broadway production, the swaggering Antiope (Elissa Landi) falls for the studly Theseus (David Manners) after their first kiss. (76 mins., 4K DCP)

Remember, your ticket covers admission to both screenings. Feel free to join us just for the second film, starting at 8:30 PM.
