Ran

(Akira Kurosawa, 1985, Japan)

New Restoration

Two individuals in kimonos kneel on the ground together looking up at something.

Majestic in scope, Ran is one of cinema’s great historical epics and features a singularly sumptuous use of color!

Akira Kurosawa’s riff on Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear, Ran is the epic tale of an aging 16th century warlord (played by the legendary Tatsuya Nakadai) with a legacy of bloodshed who intends to divide his kingdom between his three loyal sons. An unqualified visual triumph that shines in this new restoration, the film features two beautifully choreographed, stunningly shot, and carnage-filled battle scenes that steal the show! Nominated for four Oscars including best director, Ran won the 1985 award for costume design; Kurosawa later accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Academy. In Japanese with English subtitles. (160 mins., 4K DCP)
