Set in 1860s Japan, Red Lion follows Gonzo (Toshirō Mifune), a former peasant who travels with the Emperor’s Imperial Army charged with spreading word of the new ruler’s goodwill.

When the army stops at Gonzo’s former village, he asks if he can be the one to share the news and wear his commander’s red headdress. The villagers mistake him for a high-ranking officer and assume he’s been sent to rescue them from the corrupt government officials who have ruled the town for years. (116 mins., 35mm)
