Bringing to light discarded interview footage, Alain Gomis displays how even the greatest artists could not escape the racism of the 1960s.
In Paris for a concert at the end of a 1969 European tour, legendary jazz musician Thelonious Monk sat for an intimate, one-on-one interview with Henri Renaud, the white host of a French television show. A troubling dynamic quickly emerged as Renaud, an avowed admirer, antagonized Monk with belittling, trivializing questions, even as Monk more than stood his ground. Using newly discovered footage of the interview, French-Senegalese filmmaker Alain Gomis presents a revealing look at casual racism in action as well as a powerful record of one of the great musical geniuses of the 20th century.
