Guy Maddin returns in triumphant fashion with a film that manages to be both a departure for the director and completely in keeping with his singular style of offbeat humor.
Rumours imagines a meeting of world leaders who gather to address a looming global crisis but instead get lost in the woods and spend most of the film wandering aimlessly through a spooky German forest inhabited by a giant glowing brain. Starring Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), Roy Dupuis (La Femme Nikita), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Rumours is a twisted satire on the ineffectiveness of world leaders and the overstuffed summits that bring them together. Codirected by brothers and frequent Maddin collaborators Evan and Galen Johnson.
A regular visitor to the Wexner Center, Maddin was the recipient of a 2008–09 Wexner Center Artist Residency Award in support of his film Keyhole. He joins us for the screening and will participate in a Q&A afterward. (104 mins., DCP)
