Saint Joan

(Otto Preminger, 1957)

New Restoration

Black-and-white still of a woman wearing a chainmail headpiece.

One of the most notorious films in history, Otto Preminger’s Saint Joan is an audacious take on the legend of Joan of Arc.

Saint Joan stars Jean Seberg (best known for her role in Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless) as the doomed French hero. Seberg won the part only after director Otto Preminger reportedly tested thousands of women for the role. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1923 play and adapted by Graham Greene, the film was panned upon its release with most reviews ripping the script and Seberg’s performance in what was her first film role. Yet, given its pedigree (it also stars John Gielgud and Richard Widmark), it remains a must-see curio for those interested in film history. (110 mins., 4K DCP)
