Short Films by Alanis Obomsawin

Collage of three images from Alanis Obomsawin's short films

Join us for an evening of shorts spanning several decades of the legendary Abenaki filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin’s career.

Obomsawin has always centered her own communities in her filmmaking practice. In 1971’s Christmas at Moose Factory, the director tells the story of a residential school in Moose Factory, Northern Ontario, entirely through pictures made by the young children that live there. Incident at Restigouche chronicles two violent 1981 raids on the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation by the Quebec Provincial Police, who used rubber bullets, batons, and teargas to impose new fishing restrictions. No matter who is in front of her camera, Obomsawin’s fierce solidarity with and dedication to First Nations and Indigenous sovereignty and survival always shines through.

Obomsawin joins us March 3 for a special presentation of Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance that features a prescreening reception and postscreening Q&A.
