The iconoclastic Guy Maddin’s first film is a trippy fever dream of love, jealousy, homoeroticism, smallpox, and fish.
Canadian director Guy Maddin returns to the Wex to introduce a new restoration of his first feature, Tales from the Gimli Hospital (Redux). Two children fret over their ailing mother at Gimli Hospital. To console them, their grandmother spins a tale of two friends driven mad by jealously while sharing a room in Gimli during a smallpox epidemic. Employing antiquated narrative and visual techniques such as irises and superimposed images, Maddin both celebrates and satirizes the often-absurd filmmaking conventions of Old Hollywood as only he can. Contains a scene previously thought lost! Maddin was the recipient of a Wexner Center Residency Award in Film/Video in support of his 2011 film Keyhole. A Q&A with the director follows the screening. (63 mins., 4K DCP)
