Archive expert Todd Wiener introduces a landmark documentary about political pioneer Harvey Milk and two short films featuring an incredible cast of queer characters, both real and imagined.
With original interviews, news reports, archival footage, and narration by actor Harvey Fierstein, The Times of Harvey Milk chronicles the political rise of the pioneering neighborhood activist. Milk became San Francisco’s first openly gay supervisor before he was tragically assassinated by a disgruntled political rival in 1978. (90 mins., 35mm) The film is preceded by the documentary short Coming Out, featuring interviews with participants of San Francisco’s first gay pride parade, the 1972 Gay Freedom Day celebration. (10 mins., DCP) Also featured is Always on Sunday, a gender-fluid take on Jules Dassin’s Never on Sunday (1960), created by the Gay Girls Riding Club (GGRC). An underground sensation in pre-Stonewall Southern California, the GGRC was known for organizing elaborate social events and producing campy satires of mainstream movies. (10 mins., DCP)
Before the screenings, Motion Picture Curator Todd Wiener from the UCLA Film & Television Archive will join us to discuss the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project.
