Tótem

(Lila Avilés, 2023)

Columbus Premiere

A child sits in front of a cake with candles, with an adult reaching beside them.

Mexico’s stunning submission to the 2024 Academy Awards, Tótem is bursting with life and emotion.

Tótem observes family dynamics from the perspective of seven-year-old Sol. Taking place over a single day, the film follows Sol’s aunts and grandfather as they prepare with anticipation and dread for an ailing family member’s birthday party. Storylines begin to converge as Sol realizes the gravity of this year’s celebration. Recalling both the attention to detail and sensuality of the early films of past Wexner Center guest Lucrecia Martel (La Ciénaga and Zama) and the familial chaos and tenderness of Rachel Getting Married, Tótem is one of the year’s most pleasurable viewing experiences. After the success of director Lila Avilés’s first film The Chambermaid, Tótem solidifies her as one of the most exciting young filmmakers working today. In Spanish with English subtitles. (95 mins., DCP)
