Experience genre-expanding work from Christopher Harris, Želimir Žilnik, and more in this year's Unorthodocs shorts program.
This year's shorts program presents an array of projects by filmmakers featured throughout the festival. Christopher Harris’s Reckless Eyeballing (2004) is a blistering, entrancing 16mm remix of D. W. Griffith’s notorious The Birth of a Nation, with footage of Pam Grier and Angela Davis upending racist and sexist cinematic traditions. Želimir Žilnik’s Black Film (1971) remains one of the most radical and significant works to come out of the late 1960s global New Wave movements. Žilnik attempts to address homelessness by inviting a dozen unhoused men into his residence, much to his wife’s dismay. However, the film ultimately becomes a bleak inquiry into the value of filmmaking as a tool for social change. Harris and Žilnik will be present to discuss their work after the screening.
