Victims of Sin

(Víctimas del pecado, Emilio Fernández, 1951)

New Restoration

A black and white still from Victims of Sin showing a man and a woman facing each other in fancy dress.

Don’t miss this wildly entertaining collaboration between the most revered director of Mexico’s Golden Age of film and legendary cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa.

The engrossing and impassioned Victims of Sin stars Cuban Mexican film icon Ninón Sevilla as Violeta, a talented cabaret singer. When she finds the newborn child of a sex worker and her pimp abandoned in a garbage can, she adopts him as her own. Forced to abandon her career as a performer and take to the streets, Violeta is soon accepted and supported by a kindly nightclub owner. All seems well until the violent pimp returns seeking to reclaim his son. A thrilling blend of noir, melodrama, and traditional musical, the film is a wonderful showcase for Sevilla’s talents across African, Cuban, and Caribbean dance styles. In Spanish with English subtitles. (84 mins., 4K DCP)

"Fernández’s lustrously shot Mexico City film…bursts with the moody poetry of alley views and bridge vistas."
Nicolas Rapold, New York Times
