These three groundbreaking films provide multifaceted depictions of the challenges and triumphs of women who love women—stories that are uncommon even today.
A landmark of the New Queer Cinema genre, The Watermelon Woman is a smart and engaging work of fictionalized autobiography that follows a video store clerk (played by director Cheryl Dunye) who sets out to make a documentary about a Black actress of the 1930s always credited as “Watermelon Woman.” (90 mins., DCP) A Comedy in Six Unnatural Acts features comedic vignettes that place satirical twists on common insults hurled at lesbians. (26 mins., DCP) Hailed as a pioneering achievement when it was released, Choosing Children follows six sets of lesbian parents as they create their families and is one of the first documentaries to challenge homophobic and sexist attitudes about lesbian parenting. (45 mins., 35mm)
