Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman joins us to introduce and discuss his acclaimed new animated film Where is Anne Frank, a contemporary reimagining of Anne Frank’s story and legacy.
The film brings to life Kitty, the imaginary friend to whom Anne’s diary is addressed. Living in contemporary Amsterdam in the house, now a museum, where the Frank family hid from the Nazis, Kitty wanders the streets convinced that if she is still alive, Anne must be as well. As she encounters the people of the city, Kitty must reconcile the countless tributes and memorials to Anne around her with the idea that many people have not internalized the lessons to be learned from her life.
Folman, best-known for his Oscar-nominated animated documentary Waltz with Bashir (2008), which recounts his experiences as a soldier in the 1982 Lebanon War, joins Naomi Brenner, an associate professor in Ohio State’s Department of Near Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures, for a Q&A following the screening. (99 mins., DCP)
