Virtual | World Premiere

The Wexner Center for the Arts and Philadelphia-based band Empath team up to present this experimental virtual event featuring an exclusive new remix of the band's track "III."

Originally intended to coincide with the center's exhibition Sadie Benning: Pain Thing, Empath's April 23 gallery performance at the Wex—postponed due to COVID-19—moves to this online-only event with three components:

An experimental performance

This performance was recorded during quarantine and originally livecast April 25 on Baby TV, the COVID-19 streaming platform of Brooklyn venue Baby's All Right.

A Triptych marks the exclusive premiere of a new visual remix of the track "III," from Empath's 2018 EP Liberating Guilt and Fear.

Interview with the band

Hear from the members of Empath in this video interview by the Wexner Center's Kellie Morgan Lutzko. Focused on the Baby TV performance, the "III" premiere, and COVID-19 quarantine, the interview was recorded on May 13, before the nationwide protests against police brutality and systemic oppression that continue today. Visit the Wex blog for a related Spotify playlist and more about the collaboration.

Empath's volatile mix of discordance and melodic pith finds its working method somewhere in the contrast between verdant vocals and guitar, boisterous rhythms, and clamorous synths. In this confluent wash of sound and sensibilities there's a core sensitivity in the way Empath connects and communicates—both among its members and with the audience.
