Using an early flatbed scanner with a shallow depth of field for several of her recent series, Ann Hamilton transforms objects into atmospheric images in which form and material come in and out of focus. In the images of when an object reaches for your hand—which feature domestic items, biological specimens, and antique articles of clothing from Ohio State collections—scale is elusive, and the gestural quality of the imaging process often makes the scans feel like drawings. This gallery talk will focus on the importance of unexpected outcomes in Hamilton’s process and also touch on the year of research spent visiting various collections and archives at Ohio State and elsewhere.
