Breaking and Making Space: Collage and the Art of Mickalene Thomas

Patrons view work in the galleries

Join Lucy I. Zimmerman, cocurator of our fall 2018 exhibition Mickalene Thomas: I Can’t See You Without Me, for a focused discussion surrounding collage and its role in both the creation and conception of the artist’s work. Exploring art historical precedents, popular culture, and memory along with close and active looking at select works on view, Zimmerman will argue that constructed representation and the making and breaking of subject and space are critical to understanding Thomas’s oeuvre.

"Our world is a mix of collaged images and information that we constantly have to sift through…I’m interested in a form of amalgamation, an overload of information—what does one do with that?"

Lucy I. Zimmerman is assistant curator in the Wexner Center’s exhibitions department. In addition to cocurating Mickalene Thomas: I Can’t See You Without Me, she has assisted in the organization and presentation of more than a dozen exhibitions at the Wexner Center since 2014. In 2018, she curated Anita Witek: Clip, the Austrian artist’s first site-specific installation in the US. Zimmerman also curated the presentation of video works by Stanya Kahn and Nicolás Guagnini and Karin Schneider in The Box. Prior to joining the Wex, she worked as a curatorial research assistant at the Cleveland Museum of Art and contributed to the exhibition catalogues The Last Days of Pompeii: Decadence, Apocalypse, Resurrection (2012); Van Gogh Repetitions (2013); and Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse (2015), among others.
