Sara Gómez was one of two Afro-Cuban filmmakers to belong to the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) during its formative years, and she is still considered the first woman director in Cuban history. While she directed one feature-length film, One Way or Another (De cierta manera, 1974), her body of work is mostly made up of short documentaries that elevate the concerns of everyday, working people.
This two-evening series features new restorations of Gómez’s films—all screening for free, an introduction of One Way or Another by Ohio State Professor of Latin American Studies Laura Podalsky, and a discussion of the filmmaker’s shorts with Ohio State student group Cinéseries.
