One Way or Another

(De cierta manera, Sara Gómez, 1974)

Introduced by Ohio State Professor of Latin American Studies Laura Podalsky

New Restoration

A black-and-white image of a woman and man on the street. The woman wears a cap covering her head and hair and wears a tank top. To her right a man in a button down shirt and t-shirt underneath speaks to her.

Considered the first feature-length film directed by a woman in Cuba, One Way or Another frames the Cuban Revolution through a radical, Afro-Cuban feminist lens.

Dancing between documentary filmmaking and narrative fiction, One Way or Another follows the romantic relationship between Yolanda, a schoolteacher, and Mario, who works in a bus factory. The lovers are both invested in the possibilities embedded in the Cuban Revolution but differ in their critiques, questions, and dreams of a revolutionary Cuba.

Completed after Gómez’s untimely death by her collaborators and fellow revolutionary filmmakers Julio García Espinosa and Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, this film asks pressing questions that continue to be relevant to today’s social movements. In Spanish with English subtitles. (73 mins., 2K DCP)

While Gómez was only able to direct one feature-length film, she completed many short documentaries that focused on similar themes. Be sure to catch a selection of Gómez’s shorts screening September 13!
