32 Sounds

(Sam Green, 2022)

Sam Green in person
With music composed by JD Samson and performed by JD Samson and Michael O’Neill

Ohio Premiere

Sam Green wears a black button down, long sleeve shirt untucked atop dark blue jeans. He has close cropped dark hair. He is inside a sound booth and holds a long microphone and wears headphones.

Explore the profound impact of sound on our perception of the world around us in Sam Green’s new live documentary experience, 32 Sounds.

Muffled murmurs inside the womb. The loud silence of John Cage’s landmark composition 4’33”. The lonely, haunting mating call of the last Moho braccatus, a now extinct Hawaiian bird. Sam Green’s new documentary poetically weaves together these and other sonic vignettes, encouraging us to contemplate our humanity—and our mortality. Guiding us through this world of sound is the film’s cast, which includes Deaf sound artist Christine Sun Kim, poet and scholar Fred Moten, foley artist Joanna Fang, and experimental composer Annea Lockwood. (98 mins., digital video)

The film is accompanied live in Mershon Auditorium by Green’s narration and an original score by JD Samson (Le Tigre and MEN), who’ll perform onstage alongside Michael O’Neill. On entry you’ll be given a set of headphones that—like the film itself—will help you consider and experience sound in new ways.

Come early for a reception from 6:30 to 8 PM in Mershon Auditorium's lobby and enjoy complimentary popcorn and a cash bar. Stick around after the performance for a Q&A with the artists!
