The Weather Underground

(Sam Green and Bill Siegel, 2002)
Preceded by lot 63, grave c and Clear Glasses

Black-and-white photo of a crowd marching. The person in the front middle is wearing a helmet and leather jacket and has a furrowed brow.

Sam Green’s Academy Award–nominated feature The Weather Underground documents the rise and fall of a radical, left-wing group during a critical point in US history.

With revolutionary positions including Black liberation and opposition to the Vietnam War, the militant organization Weather Underground tried to violently overthrow the US government in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Many members lived in hiding for years, evading one of the largest FBI manhunts in history. Featuring archival footage and contemporary interviews, The Weather Underground marks the first time that former adherents such as Mark Rudd and Bernardine Dohrn spoke candidly about their actions and experiences. (93 mins., 35mm)

The film is preceded by lot 63, grave c, an experimental doc about Meredith Hunter, the Black teenager killed by the Hells Angels at the infamous 1969 Altamont concert during a performance by the Rolling Stones (2006, 9:47 mins., video), and Clear Glasses, an animated short inspired by a pair of glasses given to Green by former Weather Underground member Mark Rudd. (2008, 4:36 mins., video)
