Animation Restoration at Universal Studios

In this presentation, Chase Schulte, Ohio State alum and manager of Physical Archive Operations at NBCUniversal—which acquired DreamWorks Animation in 2016—walks us through a wealth of archival material that reaches back to the 1940s. You’ll see a selection of rarely seen entries from Woody Woodpecker creator Walter Lantz’s “Cartunes” library—fully restored from 35mm nitrate, successive exposure original negatives. The program also features work-in-progress restorations from classic animation series including Mr. Magoo, George of the Jungle, and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe; animated storyboards; and other creative materials from DreamWorks Animation franchises—as well as some surprises from the DVD bonus cabinet! Attendees will also get a behind-the-scenes look at library curation projects from United Productions of America (UPA) including artwork and character development sketches of Gerald McBoing-Boing and others.
