Baby Doe

(Jessica Earnshaw, 2025)

Jessica Earnshaw in person

Columbus Premiere

Closeup of a white woman with green eyes, graying brown hair, and glasses. She looks intently at a man beyond view.

A raw, devastating, and timely Ohio story, Baby Doe takes an unusually nuanced and sensitive approach to a tragic tale.

Thirty years ago, Gail Ritchey, a young woman living in a conservative Christian community in rural northeast Ohio, gave birth alone and left her newborn child in the woods. Now a mother of three, her quiet suburban life is shattered when DNA evidence links her to what the media coined “Geauga’s Child,” and she is arrested for murder despite saying the baby was stillborn. Facing a life sentence, Ritchey leans on her family for support as she confronts the weight of societal and religious pressures. Compassionately directed by Jessica Earnshaw (Jacinta), Baby Doe cuts through the headlines to uncover the human complexity of Ritchey’s case, examining the intersection of women’s health, justice, and the outside forces that continue to shape stories like hers. (100 mins., DCP)

Baby Doe premiered at the 2025 South by Southwest Film Festival and won the Cleveland International Film Festival’s Global Health Award.

"Earnshaw compassionately covers a criminal case that is unimaginable to everyone, including the woman who gave birth to the victim."
