Seeds

(Brittany Shyne, 2025)

Brittany Shyne in person

Columbus Premiere | Reception Follows

An older man wearing a hat and glasses holds a baby outdoors in a grassy field, with playground equipment visible in the background.

The exquisite Seeds offers a look into the lives of generational Black farmers, unveiling the challenges of maintaining legacy and the value of land ownership.

Ohioan Brittany Shyne’s Seeds is one of the year’s most lauded documentaries, and it’s easy to see why. Her film immerses viewers in the rhythms of everyday life for some of America’s oldest Black farmers. Seeds transforms simple moments—wind stirring through hair, candy pulled from grandma’s purse, conversations unfolding through car windows—into vivid vignettes of connection, resilience, and pride. But a sobering reality looms over these farmers: in 1910 Black Americans owned 16 million acres of land but today only a fraction remains in the hands of their descendants. With the increasing difficulty of access to funding, survival and legacy remains precarious. Seeds honors the beauty of the lives of these farmers and their fight to maintain the land for generations to come. (123 mins., DCP)

"A striking, yet unhurried, character study that is also one of the most beautiful documentaries to emerge from Sundance."
