Based on a true story, feminist filmmaker Nina Menkes’s The Bloody Child is a fragmented and cyclical meditation on the violent culture of war and the military.
A young US Marine, recently back from serving in the Gulf War, is found digging a hole in the middle of the Mojave Desert while his car, with his wife’s bloody and lifeless body inside, is found nearby. As a female officer (played by the director’s sister Tinka Menkes) oversees the investigation, the film delves into an exploration of the consequences of violence for those who serve in the military and for the people around them.
