Audre Lorde’s classic 1980 memoir of her breast cancer experience is revisited and reenvisioned by experimental filmmaker Lana Lin, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010.
At Lin’s invitation, 27 writers, artists (including Barbara Hammer), activists, healthcare advocates, and current and former patients recite the black lesbian feminist poet’s manifesto aloud for the camera, collectively dramatizing it and producing a moving oration for the screen. The film is both a critical commentary and an intimate, poetic reflection on the precarious conditions of survival within the politicized public sphere of illness. (98 mins., DCP)
The Cancer Journals Revisited is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Barbara Hammer: In This Body, the series Barbara Hammer: The Body in Film, and the presentation of Hammer’s No No Nooky T.V. in The Box.
