Days and Nights in the Forest

(Aranyer din ratri, Satyajit Ray, 1970, India)

Video introduction by Wes Anderson

New Restoration

A woman wearing a sari stands in the sand, a man is facing her with his hand against a tree.

From one of India’s most revered directors comes a new restoration of one his best films.

Based on the popular novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay, Days and Nights in the Forest follows four young, middle-class men who seek to escape their monotonous lives in Kolkata (then known as Calcutta) by vacationing in the forests of Jharkhand. Their class privilege quickly reveals itself as they get drunk, mistreat the villagers, and dismiss local customs. When two attractive women from their class appear on the scene, the men find they have met their match as they try to win the women’s attention and favor. In Bengali with English subtitles. (119 mins., 4K DCP)
