Golden Eighties

(Chantal Akerman, 1986, Belgium/France)

New Restoration

A mall storefront with woman in a red dress standing in the doorway.

Chantal Akerman’s feminist take on the musical genre is set in a shopping mall!

Akerman’s Golden Eighties is a departure from her best-known film Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, which topped the 2022 Sight and Sound poll as the greatest film of all time. Starring Delphine Seyrig, Golden Eighties is a bouncy musical that follows the love lives and friendships between store employees at a shopping mall. Akerman presents a colorful, Gen X wonderland of consumerist delights and stylish production numbers as a lens to explore her career-long preoccupations with late capitalism and the legacy of the Holocaust. In French with English subtitles. (99 mins., 4K DCP)
