Daniel Clowes shares his fascinating career as a cartoonist, illustrator, and screenwriter in this talk hosted by the Wexner Center and Cartoon Crossroads Columbus.
Clowes’s career spans nearly four decades, from his early work in Eightball to his newly released graphic novel, Monica—his first new work in seven years. One of the most decorated cartoonists of his generation, Clowes is a PEN American Literary Award Winner, and he has received numerous Harvey, Eisner, and Ignatz awards. Joining Clowes on stage is noted comics scholar and writer Irene Velentzas.
Clowes was the subject of the exhibition Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes, which traveled to the Wexner Center in 2014. In partnership with the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, the Wex also staged Eye of the Cartoonist (2014), an exhibition curated by Clowes featuring cartoon work that was influential to him.
Clowes’s creativity is not limited to comics. He has written scripts for films adapted from his comics: Ghost World (2001), Art School Confidential (2006), and Wilson (2017). He has also created artwork for numerous album covers (including the 10 inch EP Tapeworm Blues by Columbus band the New Bomb Turks), covers for the Criterion Collection, and much more. His books have been translated into more that 20 languages around the world. (program approx. 60 mins.)
Join Clowes for a book signing after the talk in Mershon Lobby. Purchase a copy of Monica in the lobby while you’re here, or preorder the book on the Wexner Center Store website and pick it up at the event.
Before the talk a CXC reception will take place from 6 to 8 PM at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum, which is just south of the Wexner Center across the plaza.
