Far from Home

(Dar Ghorbat, Sohrab Shahid Saless, 1975)

New Restoration

a person stands against a fence facing away from the camera overlooking misty, leafless trees.

The vulnerable existence of immigrants is incisively portrayed in one of the great overlooked Iranian films of the 1970s.

A penetrating meditation on loneliness and isolation, Far from Home follows Husseyin (played by Iranian actor and director Parviz Sayyad), a Turkish guest worker in West Berlin. He moves from the factory where he works, to his apartment shared with other Turkish workers, to empty parks while trying to fill his otherwise empty time. Shahid Saless’s unerring camera reveals the repetitive life of a person trying to exist in a foreign land. Made while the director navigated his own exile from Iran, the film was long unavailable in the US until its recent restoration. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience one of international cinema’s unsung talents. In Turkish and German with English subtitles. (93 mins., DCP)
