Four Flies on Grey Velvet

(4 mosche di velluto grigio, Dario Argento, 1971)

New Restoration

A doll with blonde hair and a grin is staring ahead into the camera. The background is dark, but to the left light is coming in through venetian blinds.

From its haunting environments to its memorably creepy masked killer, Four Flies on Grey Velvet is a nightmare from start to finish.

The last of Argento’s Animal Trilogy, Four Flies on Grey Velvet follows a rock drummer (Michael Brandon) who accidentally stabs a man—who has been following him—in a scuffle. The incident is photographed by a masked stranger who begins blackmailing the drummer and menacing those around him. Four Flies features Ennio Morricone’s last score for Argento until the mid-1990s. In Italian with English subtitles. (104 mins., 4K DCP)
