Hour of the Wolf

(Vargtimmen, Ingmar Bergman, 1968, Sweden)

1.	A black and white image of a man rowing a large boat to shore. A woman is sitting in the back of the boat.

The legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman brings horror and menace to his trademark examinations of relationships in crisis.

Filled with a Gothic air of nightmarish power and dreamlike effects, Hour of the Wolf features Bergman’s most iconic actors, Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, at the peak of their careers. The award-winning von Sydow stars as a haunted painter living in voluntary exile on a Swedish island with his wife (Ullmann). When the couple is invited to a nearby castle for dinner, things start to go wrong with a vengeance as a coven of sinister aristocrats hastens the artist’s psychological deterioration. Hour of the Wolf was voted one of the 50 greatest films of all time in a 2012 British Film Institute poll of over 300 filmmakers. With Erland Josephson and Ingrid Thulin. In Swedish with English subtitles. (88 mins., DCP)

Goreometer: 1 / 4

"Ingmar Bergman is still the best director of all time and Hour of the Wolf is one of my five favorite foreign films ever."
