If from Every Tongue It Drips

(Sharlene Bamboat, 2021)

Preceded by Halimuhfack (Christopher Harris, 2016) and The Crow, the Trench and the Mare (Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, 2021)

Midwest Premiere

A distorted image from an old video tape shows a partially visible person in white clothing sitting on a red carpet.

A rich play of Urdu, Tamil, and English and an artistic use of captioning create a unique sonic and visual experience in this collaborative film.

The domestic lives and daily interactions of two queer women—a poet and a cameraperson—are the starting point for If from Every Tongue It Drips. This simple yet deeply layered film collapses languages, time, and place to explore identity, otherness, distance, and intimacy. Created in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, Montreal, and the Scottish Isle of Skye, the unique call-and-response style of filmmaking allows subjects to unfold in a stunning chorus of sound and image. Sharlene Bamboat worked with the Glasgow-based accessibility advocacy group Collective Text to create engaging and vibrant captions to bridge the film’s many languages. In Urdu, Tamil, and English with full captioning. (68 mins., DCP)

Sharlene Bamboat also cowrote and coproduced the film Feet in Water, Head on Fire, screening at Unorthodocos on Saturday, October 28.

In Halimuhfack, Christopher Harris transforms an audio sample of Zora Neale Hurston documenting African American folk songs in Florida into an incantation. (4 mins., digital video)

Bringing together forms of nonlinear thinking, the short film The Crow, the Trench and the Mare (El cuervo, la fosa y la yegua) was inspired by a form of Sanskrit poetry that tells two stories concurrently in one text and uses simultaneous narration to juxtapose seemingly disconnected images and sounds. In Spanish with English subtitles. (16 mins., digital video)

Join us for an artist talk with director Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, October 27, at 4:30 PM as part of the Wex’s Diversities in Practice lecture series.

"For all its reflections on politics, history, and identity, this is also a deeply amorous film."
