Lingua Franca

(Isabel Sandoval, 2019)

A woman with long dark hair falling beneath her shoulders sits in a room. Behind her is a magazine rack, a chair with a flower pattern, and a drooping flower.

Don't miss the sensual and plaintive Lingua Franca, which marks the emergence of an exciting new cinematic force in writer/director/actress Isabel Sandoval.

Lingua Franca follows an undocumented Filipina trans woman, Olivia (played by Sandoval), after she has secured a job as a live-in caregiver for Olga (Lynn Cohen), an elderly Russian woman in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach neighborhood. Olivia’s main priority is to secure a green card to stay in America, but when she unexpectedly becomes romantically involved with Olga’s adult grandson Alex (Eamon Farren), issues around identity, civil rights, and immigration threaten her very existence. In English, Cebuano, Tagalog, and Russian with English subtitles. (89 mins., DCP)

"A moody, nuanced, often erotic film about finding sexual liberty, identity, and a sense of personal dignity while living in grips of fear in Trump’s America."
