Melancholia

(Lars von Trier, 2011)

35MM Print

A woman in a wedding dress and veil lays in a pond surrounded by lily pads and reeds holding a bouquet,

From Danish director Lars von Trier of Dogville fame comes this beautiful movie about the end of the world.

The visually sumptuous Melancholia follows the tension between sisters Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and Justine (Kirsten Dunst) on Justine’s wedding day as she battles depression and seems determined to ruin the day. Adding to the stress of the day, a massive planet is on a collision course with Earth, threatening to destroy all life as we know it. Melancholia is the second film in von Trier’s unofficial Depression Trilogy, following 2009’s Antichrist and preceding 2013’s Nymphomaniac. Its all-star cast also includes Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander Skarsgård, Brady Corbet, Charlotte Rampling, and more. (130 mins., 35mm)
