De Sica's comic fantasy follow-up to Bicycle Thieves is one of the great neorealist masterpieces.
Miracle in Milan follows Totò (Francesco Golisano), a grown orphan who now lives among the poor in a Milan shantytown. When oil is discovered on the land, a rich businessman tries to evict the downtrodden residents who instead fight back (with a little supernatural help). Despite the film’s fantasy elements, Miracle in Milan is considered one of the great neorealist masterpieces with its depiction of poverty and other social issues and its use of real locations and nonprofessional actors.
